![]() You can dive into deep waters where more rare inhabitants live without having to repeatedly come up to breathe. To really take in the sealife native to the Keys, SCUBA diving is your best option. But keep an eye open for eagle rays and turtles that every once and awhile make a special appearance in open water. Barracudas and eels however are the most frequent predators. Tiger sharks, nurse sharks and bull sharks are all common in these waters, but not often seen swimming out in the open among the divers and swimmers. The Florida Keys are home to some predators too that lurk amongst the reef. Sightings of mola-mola and the blanket octopus have both been reported. More rare sea creatures can also be found exploring the Florida Keys. Almost every kind of parrotfish can be found here living amongst triggerfish, flounder and puffer-fish. Even fish fish like barracuda swim throughout the Keys.Ĭloser to and deeper within the coral reefs, live angelfish and butterfly fish that breed in the warm current. Yellowtail snapper, goatfish, Bermuda chubs and Atlantic spadefish can all be spotted swimming in groups. Schools of blue-striped grunt can be seen swimming in and out of the coral reefs that line the ocean floor. Take a dive into the crystal clear blue waters of the Florida Keys to see a variety of sea life that will catch your interest. "Taxonomy and systematics of tetraodontiform fishes: a review focusing primarily on progress in the period from 1980 to 2014". Allen of Forres, had "frequently found a Diodon, floating alive and distended, in the stomach of the shark and that on several occasions he has known it eat its way, not only through the coats of the stomach, but through the sides of the monster". Darwin also mentioned hearing that a fellow naturalist, Dr. He noted how the fish can swim quite well when inflated, though the altered buoyancy requires them to do so upside down. The porcupine fish (as Diodon antennatus) is mentioned in Charles Darwin's famous account of his trip around the world, The Voyage of the Beagle. ![]() In fact, the risk factor is alluring to tourists, so in certain places such as Hawaii and Tahiti, it is sold in a dried up form. This however, doesn't stop people from consuming it. Normally, this will only affect a person's health but in some cases it has led to death since there is no known antidote for this type of poisoning. However, pufferfish can be a dangerous thing to eat since they can cause "Tetrodotoxin poisoning" which causes paralysis to certain parts of the body. Porcupinefish are eaten as food fish and are an exotic delicacy in Cebu, Philippines, where they are called tagotongan. Juveniles are also preyed on by Lysiosquillina maculata, tuna, and dolphins. As a result of these three defenses, porcupinefish have few predators, although adults are sometimes preyed upon by sharks and orcas. The poison is produced by several types of bacteria obtained from the fish's diet. This neurotoxin is at least 1200 times more potent than cyanide. Some species are poisonous, having tetrodotoxin in their internal organs, such as the ovaries and liver. They have upper and lower teeth that fuse into a shape of a parrot's beak, they use this beak to eat molluscs and sea urchins. A second defense mechanism is provided by the sharp spines, which radiate outwards when the fish is inflated. This increase in size (almost double vertically) reduces the range of potential predators to those with much bigger mouths. They have the ability to inflate their bodies by swallowing water or air, thereby becoming rounder. A few species are found much further out from shore, wherein large schools of thousands of individuals can occur. They are found in shallow temperate and tropical seas worldwide. They are sometimes collectively called pufferfish, not to be confused with the morphologically similar and closely related Tetraodontidae, which are more commonly given this name. Porcupinefish are medium-to-large fish belonging to the family Diodontidae from the order Tetraodontiformes which are also commonly called blowfish and, sometimes, balloonfish and globefish.
